Managing Expenses Made Easy: An Exploration on UI Transformation

Have you ever had trouble splitting expenses—from utilities to food to fares—with someone, especially in a group? Splitwise helps you keep track of shared expenses and split bills easily. It simplifies dividing costs and sharing expenses among friends, roommates, and groups, all through an intuitive and user-friendly interface. Although the app performs well in this case study, I believe there’s still room for improvement to create a more intuitive experience and better align with modern needs.

LIMITATIONS

Before we dive into the research, this case study focuses on how we can make managing expenses more intuitive and relevant by improving the UI.

01 Understanding the Problem

PROBLEM SUMMARY:

  1. Cluttered Expense and Input Flow – Too many steps, confusing custom splits.
  2. Navigation Could Be More Intuitive – Some actions are buried in menus.
  3. Visual Design & Readability Issues– Users struggle to understand “who owes whom.” Needs more elements, better hierarchy, and modern UI touches.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

How might we simplify navigation while improving readability and modernizing the UI?

GOAL:

I converted our key problems into opportunities to solve during the redesign. The app should not only have improved flow, but also be visually refreshed to stay on the trend.

02 THE RESEARCH

I have conducted usability heuristics and analysis by comparing Splitwise and its competitors, SettleUp, Splid, Tricount. This evaluation aimed to identify potential solutions that could assist us in resolving user concerns and improving the overall user experience of our app.

HEURISTICS EVALUATION ANALYSIS

  1. Splitwise has the most features but feels cluttered and uses a text-heavy interface

  2. Settle Up is functional but visually outdated. The experience is
    straightforward but not as polished.

  3. Splid is the fastest and simplest to use, great for casual users but lacks advanced features.

  4. Tricount balances simplicity and smart debt management with a clean, modern UI.

Splitwise is one of the most popular expense-splitting apps, but its UI/UX could be more improved. The data shows the strengths and weaknesses from a UI/UX perspective.

03 Design & Develop

user flow

I first focused on reorganizing and clarifying the challenge’s flow. Refining it to align with our objectives and goals for the project and have an effective design process.

SKETCHES & MID-FI SCREENS

I started the process by sketching the interface and how I could strategically place the essential features while minimizing user steps. These initial sketches went through multiple revisions. To ensure the design was both innovative and effective, I analyzed leading apps like Wise, Coinbase, and even WhatsApp to see how they design their apps and how I could effectively apply the principles to improve the experience.

SKETCHES/MIDFI
SPLITWISE USER FLOW (BEFORE)

Current screens are cluttered and some features were not easily found. Navigation could be more simplified

SPLITWISE USER FLOW (revised)

Simplifying the user follow of the navigation by merging into 1 screen – (1) Settling Balance, (2) Adding expense (3) recent people/group with balance.

04 Art Direction

  1. Soft, Minimalist Aesthetic – The UI embraces a light, pastel color palette for a welcoming and stress-free experience, aligning with financial transparency and trustworthiness.

  2. Card-Based UI Elements – Expenses and balances are displayed in well-defined cards, improving the visual structure and helping users process information faster.

  3. Rounded Components  – Buttons, input fields, and icons have rounded edges, giving a modern and approachable feel. Microinteractions (like success feedback) make the experience more engaging.

  4. Consistent Color-Coded Cues
Green for settled/positive balances (financial stability)
Red/Orange for outstanding debts (gentle urgency)
    Yellow for requests (neutral attention)

  5. Enhanced Typography & Spacing – A hierarchical font system ensures important details stand out, while increased whitespace keeps the UI from feeling overwhelming.

This improved design balances functionality, clarity, and aesthetics, making expense management in Splitwise smoother and more visually engaging.

05 FINAL RESULT

THE SOLUTION

  1. Clarity & Readability – The previous UI had text-heavy layouts, making it difficult to scan balances and recent transactions. This redesign introduces a cleaner hierarchy, ensuring key information (e.g., total balance, group debts) is more visible.

  2. Distinct Dashboard & Terminology – The new “Settle Balance” flow organizes outstanding payments into an intuitive list, making it clear who to pay or request from. Action buttons like “Owe” and “Lent” use distinct colors for instant recognition.

  3. Improved Navigation & Accessibility – The bottom tab bar navigation ensures users can quickly switch between key sections, reducing cognitive load and making the app feel more responsive.

  4. User Feedback & Confirmation – The success screen reinforces task completion with a celebratory visual, enhancing user satisfaction and reducing uncertainty.
The redesign simplifies the expense input with clearer visual design. I have added a dashboard screen where the user can see the summary of the all of debts. Overall, this enhances the contrast for readability, while a modernized UI with rounded elements and microinteractions boosts usability. These updates create a smoother, visually appealing experience adapting to modern design.Ow

TAKEAWAY

The improved Splitwise UI has made expense management more intuitive and easy. By simplifying debt tracking, streamlining navigation, and modernizing the visual design. This redesign demonstrates how thoughtful UI improvements can elevate usability while maintaining a clean and modern aesthetic.

To further improve, we can test the design on how effective it can be. We can conduct more research to introduce possible features and become “more than just an expense-splitting app” such as connecting payment methods, ‘image-to-text’ for proof and receipts, or even maybe like Paypal, turning into a banking app, and having these reward systems. The possibilities are endless, and so is making the experience even better.
